AVALANCHE BACKPACK

There are various airbag backpacks and airbag systems, all of which, like the ABS A.LIGHT avalanche backpack, have safety equipment for skiers, snowboarders or ski tourers who are off-piste. Such an avalanche backpack with an airbag system is designed to prevent the mountaineer from being buried by the snow masses of an avalanche. It is strongly recommended to wear such an avalanche backpack when skiing or snowboarding. It is extremely dangerous to be out in the open without an avalanche backpack. An avalanche backpack considerably increases the chances of survival in an avalanche.

FUNCTIONS OF AN AVALANCHE BACKPACK

An avalanche is not a liquid mass, not a waterfall. The avalanche snow consists of snow crystals of various shapes and sizes. When these granules start flowing, the granules rotate. The small parts crawl under the parts with larger volume and push them upwards. There this "segregation dynamic" subsides and the larger, heavy parts sink back again. Once a snow slab has formed, however, it remains on the surface due to the large contact area, despite the higher weight.

If a skier/snowboarder falls into an avalanche, the same thing happens. He is pushed upwards by the segregation effect. There the lift dynamic breaks off and he immediately sinks back into the snow masses. He lacks the necessary supporting surface that balances his volume density against the density of the avalanche snow for the lift. This is where the function and the difference between wearing an avalanche backpack and carrying one becomes interesting.

As soon as one gets into the avalanche, the avalanche airbag must be activated. The Twinbag system, the two lateral ABS airbags with optimized airbag shape provide the avalanche victim, together with his body lying between the airbags, with the necessary contact surface that prevents him from sinking back. In an avalanche, the mere volume of an airbag is not the decisive criterion for remaining on the surface. It depends on the additional supporting surface created by the volume and the body of the avalanche victim is integrated by the airbag in such a way that it contributes to the expansion of the supporting surface. In the ideal case, the avalanche victim lies down without being buried above the snowpack by pulling on activation handle and triggering the avalanche airbag, depending on the size and type of avalanche.

NECESSITY OF AN AVALANCHE BACKPACK ABS

You should always carry an avalanche backpack whenever you are doing winter sports in unsecured terrain, regardless of ability, gender, height or weight. There is always a certain avalanche danger and in the event of an avalanche accident, an airbag backpack may be the only chance of survival. Nevertheless, avalanche backpacks do not take the risk of getting caught in an avalanche. Before every tour you should inform yourself about the different types of avalanches, the current avalanche warning and avalanche level, and only go off-road when conditions are safe.

In addition to the avalanche backpack, there is also an emergency equipment, which should definitely be with you on every tour. For optimal ski safety it is essential that every freerider or ski tourer carries additional safety equipment. The task of the ABS system is to prevent or minimize spillage. However, since even the ABS avalanche airbag cannot prevent burials in all conceivable situations, it is absolutely necessary to carry an avalanche transceiver. ABS -Avalanche airbag, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are therefore the optimal avalanche emergency equipment - the avalanche emergency set is rounded off with a first aid kit. With the help of the avalanche transceiver, the unburied companions can search for the buried victims. The less deep you are buried after the avalanche, the higher the chances that your airways and air cavity are clear and you survive.

ADVANTAGES OF A ABS AVALANCHE BACKPACK

The new ABS A.LIGHT avalanche backpack was developed for all freeriders, free tourers and Off-Piste skiers looking for the next adventure. The avalanche backpack with airbag system presents itself not only in a new design, but also with many well thought-out and functional features. These features are ideal to support you on your next tour and to maximize your pleasure. Of course, safety comes first, so all safety features are marked in the red signal color. Like most avalanche backpacks, the ABS backpack also has additional features besides the airbag, which perfectly round off the product.

Safety compartment

The airbag backpack is equipped with an extra safety compartment, the RescUnit. The RescUnit is an integrated safety compartment that offers space for safety equipment. Thus, the shovel, probe and first aid kit have a prefabricated compartment to make the best possible use of the storage space in the backpack. This allows a compact stowage to have enough room for further equipment. With the Emergency Flap, this safety compartment can be pulled out in one easy step and allows immediate access to emergency equipment. This means that in the event of an avalanche, the avalanche backpack no longer needs to be removed and always remains on the body. This provides protection in case of another avalanche.

wearing comfort

The padded shoulder straps and special adjustable back padding ensure an ergonomic fit and optimum comfort. The special back padding protects against shovel and probe in case of a fall, and also offers an optimized carrying experience. An individually adjustable back plate with bendable aluminium braces in combination with the padded carrying straps ensure the perfect ergonomic fit and maximum comfort during ascent and descent.

Locking system

In the event of a spill, it is of course essential that the rucksack is firmly attached to the body. Therefore the rucksack is fixed with a hip strap on one side and a chest strap on the other. The chest strap with magnetic closure allows for quick and easy handling. In addition, the leg strap ensures that the avalanche backpack cannot be pulled over the head in the event of an avalanche. This loop can be neatly stowed away in a special pocket in the hip belt for transport.

Extension system

During the construction of the backpack it was already taken care to avoid any unnecessary packing volume. This makes the backpack particularly compact, so there is no reason to do without an avalanche backpack in powder. The base already has a volume of 10 litres for all the essentials that you need to take with you on a ski tour. In addition, further equipment can be individually attached to the back of the rucksack with the help of the straps. There is space for clothing, a helmet and the skis or snowboard. Nevertheless, there are days and tours where you simply need more. If additional pack volume is needed on a mountain day or a multi-day tour, the avalanche backpack can be flexibly upgraded with the new extension system with packs in two sizes (15l and 25l).

Additional features

The backpack has an insulated pocket that offers enough space for a mobile phone. This Protection Pocket not only ensures quick access, but also prevents battery loss due to low temperatures. Furthermore, the ABS avalanche backpack can be customized with optional features. The helmet holder can be used to attach the helmet to the back of the rucksack. Especially when using the extension packs, this feature offers a stowage possibility for the helmet. With the high-end helmet net, the helmet can be optimally attached in various positions on the outside of the ABS backpack. The net structure is flexibly stretchable and can be adapted to almost all helmets on the market with an additional buckle. Although no hydration system is integrated in the avalanche backpack, there is enough space in the backpack to add any conventional system. The tube of the hydration bladder can easily be threaded through the shoulder padding.
